Home Building Tips: Maximizing Small Spaces

January 7, 2017

Building a home can be a life changing task. It requires a lot of hard work, skill and dedication, but the end results are well worth it. If you think you will have some smaller rooms in your home, however, you might want to try and maximize the space. This is very easy to do and it can make all the difference to your home and its total value.

Create Open Floor Plans.

Creating an open floor plan will make your entire space look and feel bigger. Many people believe that removing the walls will also reduce privacy between the two rooms. This is not the case. Instead of having no wall at all, consider installing a very wide archway that opens up the entire room. Hang a large decorative curtain over this archway and you will be able to instantly switch between an open plan room and separate rooms with privacy. Thicker curtains work best in this instance.

Install Higher Ceilings.

If you find that your rooms still appear small, then you should consider making the ceiling higher. This can make all the difference to your rooms, not to mention that it can also really open up the space. The height also draws attention away from the walls and size, so it serves a dual purpose.

Add Large Open Windows.

Another thing that you might want to consider if you have small spaces in your rooms is your windows. Make sure that you have plenty of wide and open windows. When you are undertaking a home remodeling or building project, opt for windows that are decorative, but also choose windows that swing outwards as well, as opposed to opening upwards. This will help you maximize the space in the room and it also lets in plenty of natural light which is always desirable in new builds and homes.
